Compress GIF

Optimize GIF stills in the browser. Animated GIFs export as a compressed still frame.

How to use Compress GIF

  1. Upload a .gif file.
  2. Choose quality. Output is a compressed still (JPEG) for the largest size cut.
  3. Download the optimized file.

  • Large size reduction by flattening animation
  • Local processing

Formats: GIF

GIF compressors rank well because animated GIFs from iMessage and Twitter are often 8–20 MB. This page is honest: the browser canvas sees a still frame, then we JPEG-encode it. That is the fastest way to “lower gif size” for a reaction image you only need as a picture.

GIF is a poor photo format

GIF is 256 colors and LZW. Photographs look banded and still weigh more than JPEG. If you were sent a .gif that is really a photo, compressing it as JPEG is the correct fix, not another GIF pass.

When you need motion

Keep the original if the joke depends on frames. For memes, the Meme Generator can caption a still cheaper than shipping a 12 MB loop.

Frequently asked questions

Will my animated GIF keep moving?

Not in this MVP encoder. Canvas reads the first frame. You get a much smaller still. Use a dedicated animation encoder if you must keep every frame.
