Is 500 KB a maximum or an exact size?

A maximum. The encoder stops at or under the cap. Padding a file up to an exact byte count is a different tool (increase size in KB).

Will faces still be recognizable?

At 500 KB, maybe not if the original is a full-resolution camera file. Crop to the head and shoulders first for ID-style photos.

Does this upload the photo?

Is the PDF searchable text?

Why did my file stay larger than 500 KB?
